Kanye West has been called many things: musical genius, 21 times Grammy winner, and USA Today even stated “the greatest astist of 21st century?” Well, as of today West is also fashion’s most radical frontman. Only Kanye West could get 20.000 New Yorkers into Madison Square Garden to the premier of Yeezy Season 3. New York Fashion Week has never shown anything like this before. The premiere (actually) covered both of Yeezy Season 3 and Kanye’s new album, The Life of Pablo. The show (or should we say a concert?) proved to be the event of the day —and maybe even the week—with people lining up hours beforehand for entry. Invited or not, Kanye fans patiently waited for the doors to open. And once they did, it was madness.
As guests entered the Garden, models were unseen because they stood under a beige parachute cloth while smoke filled the arena. Then the Kardashian family made their entrance, wearing Yezzy (of course) and custom pink and white Balmain. Kanye came wearing maroon T-shirt reading “I feel like Pablo” and he was joined by Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, Pusha T, and Tyga. Then West took the mic to introduce the album with a brief preamble and so the first song were played. But here’s one question, he is called Yeezy, so who is Pablo? according to Vogue, Kanye once said “I feel like Pablo when I’m working on my shoes. I feel like Pablo when I see me on the news”, and the answer is leaning toward Picasso.
Midway through the first song, the parachute was pulled away to reveal the models and extras. They stood divided by gender, circling and on top a pair of refugee tents. The collection diverged from Season 1 and Season 2 in its more varied color palette, but still hued to the streetwear with athleisure-infused look the brand is known for. Bodysuits, cargo gear, and oversized outerwear were the dominant pieces. There was also West’s muse, rapper Lil Yacht wearing red sweater to match his red hair. And seen on the feet of the rapper was a first look at the evolution of the #YEEZYBOOST 350. The new silhouette itself seems to sport a longer toe atop a more curvaceous sole unit and pronounced arch, while a bright orange streak runs lengthwise across its dark grey upper.
In the middle of the next track, another muses like Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, and Veronica Webb came out wearing black body suit and fur coats and posed atop the platform with the female models. The crowd went wild for Naomi, chanting her name so much that the modeling veteran couldn’t help but break into a smile. After the album streaming had ended, West issued a number of shout outs, thanking the fans for coming, adidas for paying for the event, and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing for designing custom pieces—West called them a collaboration—for the Kardashians to wear to the event. Then, West played a trailer for a video game he created about his mother entering the gates of heaven called “Only One.” He also promised that he’s working with Adidas to produce more Yeezy sneakers and also lower prices, concluding his speech by thanking fans once more and admitting that one of his dreams, which he hopes to accomplish soon, is to become the creative director of Hermès.
It was clear that Yeezy Season 3 is one of New York’s most hyped shows. Because there were part album listening, part fashion presentation and the event was broadcast in movie theaters across the globe. And thanks to TIDAL, now you can catch the show through their exclusive live stream.
