First walk into Gentle Monster, the South Korean eyewear brand that has opened its New York City flagship store, you might be wondering where all the eyewear. Its minimalist entryway consists of little more than a concierge and the poured concrete floors inlaid with wooden slabs that run throughout the 500-square foot space.
And now they has transformed its New York City flagship store into an underwater experience entitled “Grand Blue.” The space is inspired by the ocean, and is designed in collaboration with aquarium designer Justin Muir and glass sculptor Ivan Lee Mora. Taking a page from the French film Le Grand Bleu, Gentle Monster’s interpretation of this vision is to represent peace and happiness on the surface of the ocean. Emulating its clashing waves, the installation is constructed from recycled, laminated glass. Also available on view at Gentle Monster is a custom aquarium with 150 gallons in volume, built from cerused oak of gray and black with custom silver banker mesh. If you happen to be in the area, pay a visit to “Grand Blue” which on display until August 31.
