Yesterday Balenciaga released their Pre-Fall 2016 collection online lookbook modelled by the legendary Stella Tennant, and Balenciaga's own runway star Julia Nobis and Marland Backus. The Balenciaga Pre-Fall collection was the work of the internal team, designed during the awkward transitional period between the departure of Alexander Wang and the first runway show by Demna Gvasalia, or so the brand’s press release has it.
Although apparently designed by an in-house team, the collection is undeniably feel like the work of newly installed creative director, Demna Gvasalia, who made his official debut back in March over Paris Fashion Week. The collection featured high collars, boxy silhouettes, oversized hoodies, floral prints and various pairs of slick thigh high boots, which really looked like Vetements inspired aesthetics. Whether the team was anticipating the new incoming creative director or the inspiration was genuinely subconscious, because the incorporation of a hoodie alongside elongated sleeves and kitschy floral graphics seems to prompt an uncanny resemblance. Other references, picked from the time of Nicolas Ghesquière, was an oversize shearling aviator jacket, refurbished with a printed collar spelling out the brand name, a neat trick Gvasalia reprised with the large Balenciaga labels he put on the puffer jacket and anorak in his debut Fall show. Whether or not the new collection was truly without direction from the Georgian designer, the new pieces remain to be a remarkable teaser for Demna Gvasalia’s highly anticipated first collection.
